Rise Park Infants & Junior Schools - Consultation to Make the School Street Scheme Permanent
Overview
Have your say on the Rise Park School Streets Scheme
Havering Council would like to hear your views on whether the School Streets Scheme at Rise Park Infant and Junior Schools should become permanent.
The scheme restricts most motor vehicles from entering the streets around the schools at the start and end of the school day. It is designed to create a safer and more pleasant environment around the schools and encourage more children and families to walk, cycle or scoot where possible.
Before a decision is made about the future of the scheme, we want to know what you think.
How does a School Street work?
During the operating times, motor vehicles are restricted from entering the School Street Zone unless they are exempt or have an appropriate permit. Exemptions include residents and certain other vehicles, such as emergency vehicles.
Signs at the entrances to the zone show when the restrictions are in operation, with additional signs on surrounding roads to give drivers advance warning.
The zone is monitored by cameras at its entry points. Vehicles entering during the restricted times without a valid permit or exemption may receive a Penalty Charge Notice. Vehicles leaving the zone are not monitored.
Why was the scheme introduced?
The School Streets Scheme aims to make the area around the schools safer and more pleasant at busy drop-off and pick-up times.
By reducing the number of vehicles immediately around the school entrances, the scheme aims to:
- improve road safety for children, families and other road users
- reduce congestion and inconsiderate parking
- improve local air quality
- encourage more children and families to walk, cycle or scoot to school
- support healthier and more active journeys.
What are the potential benefits?
Safer streets
Reducing traffic around school entrances can help create a safer environment for children walking, cycling and scooting, as well as for other road users.
Cleaner air
Reducing the number of vehicles around the school, particularly vehicles waiting with their engines running, can help reduce local air pollution.
Healthier journeys
Walking, cycling and scooting to school can help children and families build more physical activity into their daily routines.
