Squirrels Heath Road Collisions Reduction Programme - Proposed safety improvements

Overview

Havering Council is looking for your views on revised a proposed safety improvement scheme for Collier Row Road and Hog Hill Road.

It follows a feasibility study that was carried out and found that up to 1,200 vehicles per hour use Squirrels Heath Road with speeds of up to 45 mph regularly recorded. Further analysis of collision records showed that there has been a total of fourteen personal injury accidents (PIAs) recorded along Squirrels Heath Road between A127 Southend Arterial Road and Gubbins Lane. Of these fourteen PIAs, one was fatal, four were serious, three involved pedestrians, three occurred in wet conditions and four occurred during the hours of darkness.

With funding being provided by the Mayor of London’s Transport for London office (TfL), we can now look at a proposed scheme including the following as shown on the attached plans:

• Speed cushions at regular intervals along Squirrels Heath Road to bring speeds down to an acceptable level.
• A new zebra crossing along Squirrels Heath Road by Douglas Avenue to assist pedestrians, particularly school children, to cross the carriageway at this location.
• A new zebra crossing along Squirrels Heath Road between Cotswold Road and Recreation Avenue to assist pedestrians, particularly school children, to cross the carriageway at this location.

Any person desiring to object to the proposals or make other representation should send a statement in writing and the grounds thereof to Senior Schemes Engineer, Traffic and Parking, Town Hall, Main Road, Romford, RM1 3BB, or by email at schemes@havering.gov.uk, quoting reference Ref: QX016 by Friday 17^th April 2026.

Please note we are unable to answer individual points raised at this stage, however your comments will be noted and taken into consideration when presenting the final report to the Council’s Director for Environment. Any issues will be addressed at that time.

All comments received are open to public inspection and the report will be made public.
